Video games will inspire 250 thousand users to take care of the planet

The alliance will implement strategies to protect the environment through video game technology .

11 companies of the most important companies in the video game industry worldwide, committed to implement a series of environmental actions integrating them into their games as part of their environmental contribution.

The implementation of actions in its games, in its thematic events, buildings and environmental messages for its more than 250 million users, bet on a change of consciousness among its followers.

The environmental activations will be integrated into live games such as Subway Surfers, Angry Birds 2 and Golf Clash and respond to the Playing for the Planet Alliance, facilitated by UNEP, with the support of Green Mobile Game Jam, whose organizers hope that shared learning and new practices will represent a turning point for green thinking in game design for a mass audience.

“We are delighted to see how the video game industry supports global efforts to reverse the climate crisis. This emergency needs everyone's input. By reaching 250 million players, we hope that the public will be inspired to act, ” said Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director.

“There was skepticism as to whether we could pull it off, especially during lockdown, but it was really inspiring to see companies, who are normally very competitive with each other, come together and deliver excellent work. I see great potential for our industry and gaming communities in the future, "said John Earner, CEO of Space Ape, who helped oversee collaboration between the companies who will develop actions such as:

  • MAG Interactive will run themed tree planting and awareness events in its WordBrain and WordBrain2 games.
  • Sybo will launch a world tour stop at Subway Surfers calling on the community to act on the front lines of the climate crisis.

  • Space Ape will educate players on the benefits of renewable energy through its Transformers: Earth Wars game.
  • WildWorks introduced new renewable energy options, such as solar and wind, that reward players with special green credits and unlocks in the Animal Jam game.
  • Playdemic will seek to educate and inspire millions of mobile players in its Golf Clash game.
  • Fingersoft will add solar panel charging stations in Hill Climb Racing 2.
  • Rovio will host two events within Angry Birds 2 around the theme of reforestation and share links with players where they can learn more about reforestation efforts and how they can contribute.
  • Pixelberry will design a new book in Choices that will be about two sisters raising awareness about climate change after their family's fishing business is hit by a major fish kill.
  • Creative Mobile will support biodiversity restoration through special fundraisers for the Wolf Conservation Trust in their Zoocraft: Animal Family game.
  • Future Games of London is unveiling the melting of polar ice with a new update in Hungry Shark World called Arctic Extinction.
  • GameDuell will provide players with practical sustainability information that they can use in their daily lives.

The actions proposed today by some of the 11 most important video game companies in the world took place in a meeting in April and today each of them announced their definitive contributions on issues such as climate change, reforestation and restoration of the nature, even renewable energy education programs.

Some activations have already been integrated into the games and the rest will go live in early 2021 or earlier. The Playing for the Planet Alliance partnered with Google Play to promote the games with new activations later this year. Next year, organizers hope that more companies will sign up to participate in the collaborative gathering, with the potential to reach one billion players.
